Glasgow 850 Talk: John Alston and the Glasgow Asylum for the Blind

  • The Mitchell Library North Street Glasgow, Scotland, G3 7DN United Kingdom (map)

Founded in 1804, the Blind Asylum aimed to help those who were often among the poorest and most neglected in society.

Carol Parry, Librarian at the Trades House of Glasgow, explores the role of merchant philanthropist John Alston, whose development of raised lettering preceded Braille in enabling blind people to read.
