Glasgow 850 Talk: Glasgow Merchants and the Campaign for Free Trade in Asia 1813 -1833

  • The Mitchell Library North Street Glasgow, Scotland, G3 7DN United Kingdom (map)

Until 1834, the East India Company held a monopoly on trade with China. Why and how did it change, and what was the role of Glasgow merchants and companies such as James Finlay & Co. (still trading today) in achieving it?

Professor MacKillop’s intrerests focus on Scotland’s history since 1707 and the British Empire in Asia, particularly its involvement with the East India Company from 1690 to 1820.
