A guided visit to Balfron, the Stirlingshire birthplace of Alexander Thomson and most of his family, conducted by the Balfron Heritage Society. An industrial centre for cotton milling in the late 18th and 19th centuries, Balfron shaped Thomson's early years.
Includes lunch and a tour of the village, the churchyard where 'Greek' Thomson's father (and at least one brother) is buried, and the cottage where Thomson was born.
The visit starts at Balfron Lower John McLintock Hall with “Life of Truth & Beauty” - a one man presentation on Balfron at the Time of Greek Thomson followed by the walking tour (above).
For those driving, car parking is available behind the church hall or in the carpark of Shearer's Garage (please avoid the car wash!). Price £10.00 (plus Eventbrite charges) per head (includes lunch).
For those travelling to Balfron by bus, the McGills Midland Bluebird X10 leaves Buchanan Street bus station Stance 34 at 1010, Maryhill Shopping Centre at 1030 and Milngavie Railway Station at 1053 arriving at Balfron Clinic (opp. The McLintock Hall) at 1128.
