Thomson150 at the Mitchell

2025 sees the 150th anniversary of the death of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson which took place at his home in 1 Moray Place, Strathbungo on the 22nd March 1875.

To mark the occasion the Alexander Thomson Society is working with the Mitchell Library in Glasgow to stage a two month exhibition of Thomson’s plans and drawings, photographs of his buildings both extant and demolished, and other artifacts.

Alongside the exhibition, which will run from mid-March to mid-May, the Society is organising a program of events about Thomson and his works, taking place in the Mitchell Library’s Moir-Dyer Room at 1.00pm on successive Saturdays:

  • 15 Mar: 'Greek' Thomson: An Introduction, with Dominic d'Angelo

  • 22 Mar: The Greek Revival buildings that inspired Greek Thomson, with Scott Abercrombie

  • 29 Mar: Where Thomson Worked, with Dominic d'Angelo

  • 5 Apr: Alexander Thomson and Owen Jones, with Dr Ailsa Boyd

  • 12 Apr: Film: 'Nineveh on the Clyde', introduced by Murray Grigor.

The Thomson150 exhibition forms part of a year-long programme of weekly free talks and films organised by the Society in collaboration with the Mitchell Library, Mediaeval Glasgow Trust, Glasgow City Heritage Trust, Planning Exchange, and The Trades House of Glasgow.
